Our Vision

Nestled upon a hilltop overlooking the Saddleback Valley to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the South sits an educational community known for the past 39 years as Top of the World Elementary School, affectionately known as TOW. In today's fast paced society it is refreshing to find a close knit neighborhood school where families walk to school with their children, stop to have a chat with staff, other parents and maybe have a cup of coffee. Staff, parent volunteers, and the principal meet the buses as they drive in each morning and open car doors to greet each student with a warm smile and a "Good Morning". TOW is proud to maintain its hometown feel and instill this sense of community to each and every student.

TOW is located in Laguna Beach, a small town surrounded by the exploding growth of South Orange County, California. TOW is one of two elementary schools, which feed into Thurston Middle School. Families come from areas east of the Pacific Coast Highway and the inland community of Aliso Viejo. The program consists of a special education pre-school and kindergarten through fifth grades. There are currently 561 students enrolled in the school. TOW also maintains a school within a school known as The Community Learning Center (CLC). CLC serves 40 students in grades first through fourth in a small campus adjacent to the main campus. The CLC approaches the curriculum from a holistic worldview centering on peace and a community spirit. This program is an extension of the overall philosophy of TOW.

TOW's academic program emphasizes a strong commitment to the core subjects and academic rigor balanced with enrichment programs that foster a well-rounded student experience. TOW adopted the Harcourt Brace series five years agos which encompasses all grade levels. We are currently entering our fifth year of using the Open Court English/Language Arts (ELA) adoption that also provides a consistent ELA program across all grade levels. TOW exhibits the quality of the academic program in its API score. The API score for the 2006  testing period is 914. We continue to score at or above the Statewide Performance Target of 800. The Beckman Science program provides an exciting hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum. Social Studies completes the well -rounded core curriculum. In addition to the rigorous core curriculum TOW emphasizes the arts in education in a variety of enrichment programs. Students learn about famous artists and create their own works of art based on the artist's style in our very popular Art Masters Program. This year students are learning about the life of composer Sergi Prokofiev through a series of assemblies sponsored by the Pacific Symphony. This Class Act Program helps instill an appreciation for classical music from the earliest grades through fifth grade. TOW also participates in a series of assemblies that emphaize the cultural arts sponsored by the Orange County Perfroming Arts Center Educational Foundation. A wide variety of educational field trips for each grade level ranges from an overnight trip aboard the Brig Pilgrim, related to the social science curriculum, to going back in time with a historical visit to the Kellogg Historical House Museum.

To extend the opportunity for students to thrive, TOW has developed a comprehensive after school program available to all students in grades 1-5. The PTA sponsors the after school program and provides scholarships to any student who needs assistance. At this time, over 70% of TOW students participate in the after school program which includes classes such as Garden Club, Academic Chess, Chorus, Story Telling, Art, Mad Science, Digital Animation, Digital Filmaking, Guitar, Violin, Drums, Computer Club, Drama, Musical Minds and many more. There is truly something for everyone in the after school program.

What makes TOW unique is the strong community spirit. Parent volunteers are present in classrooms in an incredible show of support for their children. Last year over 28,000 hours were donated to our school. TOW is a school where students truly know that they are nurtured and supported by all the adults in their lives.

Chipper's Corner

Our wonderful Witness Our Writing (WOW) contest has begun for the 2009-2010 school year.!

Please enjoy the following stories from our grade level winners.

This months topic is " I Am Special"

 First Grade -  Shelby

I am good at gymnastics because I always get a medal.

I am great at scoring goals. I am a good soccer player.

I am nice because when someone falls down I will help them up.

I am good at math because I can add.

I love the world because that's where I got made.

I like to read  "Green Eggs and Ham."

Grade 2 - Angelina

I am special because I look like my Mom. Another way I am special is that I am very different from my sister. She is very different from my family because she is not shy,  she talks to strangers and she likes babys. I am special because I have tons of friends, I can't  even count all of my friends. Another way I am special is I am good at math. I have lots of ways I am special. I will say three more ways I am special, one way I am special is that I can talk in three languages. I will tell you one of them. I can speak Japanese. There are different letters than the U.S.A. Japan is cool, they make cool pencils and erasers. Another thing that is special about me is that I like to draw different things and people, sometimes I even draw animals. The last thing that is special about me is that I am two grades ahead of my class in math. That is everything that is special about me.

 Grade 3 - Lucinda

I don't know but I've been told I'm special in many ways. Here are 3 reasons I am special. For one reason I don't brag. That is why I feel bad ,so this paper was very hard  for me to write. Another reason is I'm forgiving. When my friend threw up on my book, instead of yelling at her, I forgave her. Last, I have a green thumb (that means I know how to take care of plants.) When Miss Baghai's plant dies, I bring it back to life. Then I make a health chart for it. Then Miss. Baghai gets a green thumb too!! That is why I am special!!

Grade 4 - Audrey

What makes you special? How are you different? Everyone is unique in one way or another. Don't let fear hold you back. The best you can do at  any one thing may not be the same as another. Be proud of who you truly are.

What makes me proud are my hobbies. Most of all I like singing, acting, and dancing. I've learned to love shows like a child loves their blanket. As if it were a part of me. I also play the guitar and waterpolo. But I have only played the guitar for half of a month. I have done a lot of activities that are wonderful hobbies. For example: art, cooking, waterpolo, and writing. Not everyone does what I do, but it is what makes me special!

Sometimes you have days that don't go the way you plan. Maybe people don't appreciate your talent. You shouldn't let that change you. Everyone has something that makes them happy. Or even a person can do the same!

You and I both make a difference in the world. No matter how big or how small!

I am a PAL at TOW plus I save paper by recycling. Just by putting stuff in the trash you make a difference to this world.

Dig a little deeper and believe. What matters is what you think and not what others think. Be what you want to be. When you put work into things you can do it! Believe!

 Grade 5 - Ryan

So many people are special in so many different ways. From sports to literature, from reading to writing, and even from female to male, everyone is unique in their own way. Many people try to classify others, but even people with similarities are different in the slightest ways. People may think they are the same or want to be the same, but digging deep can help you see who you truly are. I am Ryan, and I am unique in so many ways.

I see myself as a person who doesn't judge a book by its cover, and I can sense who a person is. I do this through people's faces. I can look into someone's eyes and get a feeling of who they are. Althought I am able to do this, I don't judge them by my senses instead I just get to know them. I will be a friend to anyone even if they do not make the best companion. My father always tells me to look for three qualities in others; enthusiasm, wittiness, and good hearts. I always try to possess these three qualities myself so I can always be a good friend to others.

My family and friends always tell me that I am intelligent. I believe this is unique. I have good intellect and I am a fast learner. I understand concepts easily that help me to become good at something really fast. For example, I have turned out to be a highly skilled pianist in a little over a year! I have such a love for it now. I am also a very fast typist. My recent record is 97 words per minute. I was inspired when my teacher told me that I was only 22 words away from the fastest fifth grade typist.

I also believe that I am a good thinker and this is unique to me. Having this quality makes me very creative. I have a strong vocabulary and I am good at creative writing. I love to write adventure stories for kids because being a child gives me the opportunity to express myself and relate to others my age. Having a good vocabulary has allowed me to be able to give great oral presentations in front of others. Being in front of others opens a door for me to act. I once went to a youth theater and my instructor said I was a good actress. I love to come up with interesting ideas for my little siblings to act in. When I grow up, I don't know what I want to be. There are so many things to choose from! I want to be an actress, a writer, an author, a director, a teacher, a photographer, a news reporter, an editor, and so many more things! Another one of these things is a world traveler, and that is mainly because of where I've already been.

I am unique becuase I get to experience knowing so many places in the world and at such a young age. I just had my 10th birthday. This winter break, I just got back from Australia, which is where I went  for  winter break. I also get to go to New Jersey every summer, because that is where I used to live. I have been fortunate to have been to places like; Paris, London, Israel, Egypt, Thailand, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Italy. My first airplane ride was twelve hours when I was six months old and I first flew as an unaccompanied minor for five hours when I was nine. I've been inspired to travel the world by my Dad. My father is an international photographer and he goes on trips all around the world. During winter vacation (and sometimes spring break) he takes me around the world with him. After every trip we have a tradition to make a photo album on the computer of all the pictures we took. We write little captions for every picture and then sent the document to Apple. A couple of weeks later, we get our book in the mail! We still need to make a couple more, but that's what I love about being unique, nobody is the same nor does the same things.

I am unique in so many more ways, but I can't  write them all here. Others are uniques and so am I; in fact, everyone is. I believe that the reason we write these essays is because the teachers want us to discover more about ourselves and want us to feel better about ourselves. So when you read this essay and when you read other's essays, just remember: Everyone is unique!
